Image
Israeli soldiers  shot dead  two unarmed Palestinian men at close range in Gaza, their bodies buried in sand and rubbish by an army bulldozer, exclusive broadcast footage obtained by Al Jazeera has shown. The men repeatedly waved what appeared to be white fabric, in a sign of surrender and to show they did not pose a threat. Israel’s war on Gaza: List of key events, day 174

Here’s how things stand on Thursday,  March 28 , 2024: Fighting and humanitarian crisis On Thursday morning, Al Jazeera Arabic reported that Israeli forces launched air attacks on northern Gaza, including Gaza City and the Shati and Jabalia refugee camps. Separately, footage obtained by Al Jazeera on Thursday shows Israeli soldiers shooting dead two Palestinian men who were walking along the coast towards northern Gaza. The two – who had white pieces of cloth raised – were then buried by an Israeli bulldozer. Almost 160 Palestinians were killed and 195 injured by Israeli attacks between Monday and Wednesday, the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) reported on Wednesday, as heavy fighting continues in northern Gaza City. Two-thirds of Gaza’s 36 hospitals are “non-functional” while those that remain open are either “minimally” or “partially” functional, according to OCHA. The Internati

The United States and the Middle East: the Politics of Miscalculation BY MELVIN GOODMAN

Image
John Foster Dulles with U.S. President Eisenhower in 1956 – Public Domain The U.S. experience in the Middle East is a classic study of political and military miscalculation leading to strategic failure.  President Joe Biden’s political support for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, which is being sorely tested, and his military support for Israeli Defense Forces (IDF), which is making the United States complicit in Israel’s genocidal campaign, is the latest and worst example of U.S. miscalculation.  Overall, the exercise of U.S. military power in the Middle East, designed to gain strategic advantage, has backfired.  It has led to disarray in the Middle East and the Persian Gulf, and has opened diplomatic opportunities for Russia and China. The modern start for U.S. miscalculation in the Middle East took place nearly 70 years ago, when Secretary of State John Foster Dulles offered to support the construction of Egypt’s Aswan Dam and then abruptly reneged.  When Dulles, bowing

Distinctions Without Difference: The Security Council on Gaza Passes BY BINOY KAMPMARK

The UN Security Council presents one of the great contradictions of power in the international system. On the one hand vested with enormous latitude in order to preserve international peace and security, it remains checked, limited and, it can be argued, crippled by an all too regular use of the veto by members of the permanent five powers (US, Russia, China, the United Kingdom and France). When it comes to the bleeding and crushing of human life in Gaza by the Israeli Defence Forces ( 32,300 dead  Palestinians and rising), resolutions demanding a cease fire of a conflict that began with the attack on Israeli soil by Hamas militants have tended to pass into voting oblivion.  The United States, Israel’s great power patron and defender, has been consistent in using its veto power to ensure it, exercising it on no less than three occasions since October 7. On March 25, a change of heart was registered.  Washington, reputationally battered for its unconditional support for Israel, haught

Complicit in Genocide: Where Israel Gets Its Weapons From BY RAMZY BAROUD

Over 9,000 Palestinian women have been   killed   since the start of the Israeli war on the Gaza Strip. Mothers have been the largest share of Israeli killings, at an   average   of 37 mothers per day since October 7. The numbers above, from the Palestinian Health Ministry in Gaza and the Red Crescent Society respectively, only convey part of the suffering experienced by 2.3 million Palestinians in the Strip. There is not a single section in Palestinian society that has not paid a heavy price for the war, although women and children are the ones who have suffered most, constituting over 70 percent of all victims of the ongoing Israeli genocide. True, these women and their children are killed at the hands of Israeli soldiers, but they are murdered with US-western  supplied  weapons. Now, however, we are told that the world is finally turning against Israel, and that the west’s nod of approval to Tel Aviv to carry on with its daily massacres may soon turn into a collective snub.
